About Noémi Katalin Schuurman

I'm a methodologist in psychology dedicated to empowering students and researchers to think critically about methods and statistics. I work as an assistant professor at the Methods & Statistics department, at the faculty of social science at Utrecht University.

My focus

Central in my work, both teaching and research, is considering the theoretical implications of methodological and statistical choices. I specialize in measurement and analysis for intensive longitudinal research.

Research

My research interests are methodology for intensive longitudinal research, psychological measurement theory, and theory formation. My work often features dynamic modeling, measurement modeling, idiographic and multilevel modeling, and Bayesian estimation. I'm also generally interested in the functioning of academia and science, open science, and matters of scientific integrity.

Teaching

Teaching is integral to my work. I've developed various courses and workshops, and teach across all university levels—bachelor’s, master’s, and postgraduate. I cover topics ranging from intensive longitudinal analysis, Bayesian statistics, and causal inference to SEM, R programming, multivariate analysis, and foundational methods & statistics. I also frequently host workshops.

Consultation and guidance

I'm happy to support researchers and students seeking clarity, and have more than 15 years of experience offering methodological consultations. You’re welcome to request a session here, or via my university email—but fair warning: my schedule fills up fast, and I frequently have to say no. I also enjoy helping students, PhD candidates and other early career researchers navigate academia. At my job this is formalized in my role as PhD candidate mentor at my department, for example.

Beyond academia

I live my life together with my husband, child, and two cute cats. In my free time I enjoy creating things - including but not limited to - meals, drawings, ceramics, and furniture and designs for my home and garden. I also enjoy singing and playing video games.
